Jazz Education Materials

Occasionally, I will explore new ideas for jazz improvisation.  Since I never formally studied improvisational pedagogy and have no designs on publishing any kind of book or method, I have made them available here, for those who are interested . . .

  • ii-V-I Patterns, #1
These are a number of ii-V-I patterns which I created after watching a Kenny Werner video on creating lines.
  • ii-V-I Patterns, #2
These are a number of ii-V-I patterns in C major which I created after taking a lesson with Dean Mongerio.  In these patterns, I am substituting an Ab Dorian sound (interchangeable with Ab Melodic Minor) over the G7 chord.
  • 6-Note Digital Pattern, Expanded Diminished Concept
This is a digital pattern concept which I began exploring after a Bob Mintzer masterclass.  I have taken the pattern and moved it by half steps, whole steps, and minor 3rds.  At the final stage of the idea, I used the minor 3rd permutation as an expanded diminished concept approach to apply to a V7-I cadence.  In the end, I didn’t spend enough time with it to let it filter into my playing, but I thought it was an interesting idea.
